The Country of Jamaica

The island of Jamaica was founded in 1494 by Christopher Columbus, which makes it one of the earliest land masses discovered by Europeans.
Spanish people settled the island in the 16th century. African slaves were brought over to develop the agriculture in Jamaica. Jamaica produces sugar, cocoa and coffee. In 1834, slavery was abolished and this released over a quarter million slaves. A lot of those former slaves stayed and started agricultural concerns.
The country of Jamaica started out as home for the Taino Indians. It became a Spanish settlement and then an English settlement and the a member of the Federation of the West Indies to total independence in 1962.
